The Thinking Traps That Keep Us Stuck

By PhD.JWT on March 13, 2025August 28, 2025

Why You Feel Stuck (And Why Thinking Harder Won’t Fix It)

Ever feel like your brain is running an old software update that just won’t install? You tell yourself, “Tomorrow, I’ll get it together.” But tomorrow comes, and nothing changes.

🚨 Spoiler Alert: It’s not just you. Your brain is wired to keep you stuck.

And here’s the kicker: It’s not just in your head—it’s in your body, too.

a vast mental maze, looking for an escape.

Life can feel like standing at the entrance of a massive, twisting maze. Your gut instinctively knows there’s something better on the other side, but every turn feels uncertain.

🔄 The Loop of Fear: “What if I fail? What if I try and nothing changes?”
🔄 The Loop of Limitation: “This is just who I am. It’s too late to change.”
🔄 The Loop of Overwhelm: “There’s too much to fix. I don’t know where to start.”

Sound familiar? These aren’t just thoughts. They create real physical responses in the body.

➡ Fear? Triggers cortisol, spikes anxiety, and keeps you playing small. (Sapolsky, 2004).
➡ Limiting beliefs? Filter out opportunities that could actually change your life (Nickerson, 1998).
➡ Overwhelm? Paralyzes action, leaving you stuck in “I’ll start tomorrow” mode (Graybiel, 2008).

🚨 The Biggest Problem:
When your body is stuck in survival mode, real transformation isn’t possible. Your brain deprioritizes higher awareness, creativity, and personal growth because it’s too busy reacting to perceived threats. (McEwen, 2007).

💡 Think about it: Can you feel love and hate at the exact same time? No. It’s impossible to hold two opposing thoughts simultaneously. The same applies here—when your focus is locked in survival, there’s no mental bandwidth left for expansion or transformation (Baumeister et al., 2007).

Crossroads. The choice is yours!

🔍 Why Growth Stops When You’re in Survival Mode

Ever feel like no matter how much you want to change, something holds you back?

📌 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs explains why:

1️⃣ Survival (Food, Shelter, Health) – If you’re exhausted, thriving isn’t an option.
2️⃣ Security (Safety, Stability) – If life feels uncertain, your mind stays on high alert (Maslow, 1943).
3️⃣ Belonging (Connection, Support) – You need safety before focusing on relationships.
4️⃣ Esteem (Confidence, Self-Worth) – Growth begins when you shift out of fear into possibility.
5️⃣ Self-Actualization (Transformation, Spiritual Growth) – The highest level only happens when the mind & body feel safe.

🚨 If you’re constantly in fight-or-flight mode, your brain isn’t allowing you to thrive—it’s keeping you trapped in survival.
